For Christmas, my dad bought my mum a paperback copy of The Bottle Stopper. (In fact, he bought five copies, and distributed them around family members.) My parents have been really excited about this book. Which, of course, in itself doesn’t seem out of place, but until now, their reaction to my writing has been a little luke warm. Non plussed really.
It’s amazing the difference people see between releasing an ebook, and releasing a physical book they can actually hold. We’re tactile creatures at heart, aren’t we?
My dad’s working his way through the book, and he’s not a big reader these days, and my mum is always so busy with family stuff that she wasn’t sure when she’d get around to reading it.
But then she sent me this email:
This truly made my day. Now, I know she’s my mum, but she’s never gushed over anything I’ve written before. And to get through it so quickly, when she’s so busy, is quite a feat.
So, yeah, I know she might not be my most unbiased reader, but she’s my mum, so her opinion matters to me far more than most.
Of course, now I also have her hassling me for book two!
